Hello everyone. I apologize for not posting sooner, but I've been extremely busy island hopping for corals. I would like to interrupt "my adventures in Hong Kong" for an important announcement.
Some friends in the industry have alerted me to a proposed bill that is going to be sent to the congress tomorrow. If it passes, we can say goodbye to the export of fish and corals. This bill does not only effect us reefers, but it also applies to all nonnative wildlife in the US.
The bill is known as H.R. 669, and it was probably conceived by dumb people that had nothing to do but sit there in front of their computers and think of ways to make life better, without actually thinking! Basically the purpose of this idiotic bill is "To prevent the introduction and establishment of nonnative wildlife species that negatively impact the economy, environment, or other animal species or human health, and for other purposes"
Can you imagine what the consequences would be if this bill would pass? Basically the whole pet trade would be in jeopardy. How can you help? Go check out this Youtube video to find more information and how you can make a difference.
Thanks,
Eddie

Eddie, I understand how the reaction many are having could be scary, but fortunately, most are misinterpreting the bill drastically. In short, it would NOT ban import of all corals/fish by default, as many are making it seem it would. I've tried to explain how the legislative process works here: http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/f6/hr-669-setting-the-record-straight-130242.html
Hello mcliffy2,
First thanks for checking out my blog. Second, thanks for clarifying some of the underline issues of the proposed bill. I think the bill will be amended if it ever gets passed the first talks.
However, I do have to agree with the elegance coral guy on the bill. If it ever passes, you hobbyists will definitely negatively be affected. But guys like me that rely on export for a living, will be devastated. In my opinion, as an exporter, I really don't see any good that can come out as a result of this bill.
Just my 2 cents!
Cheers from hot and rainy South Sulawesi,
Eddie
Eddie, Check out the video of the HR 669 if you get a chance. I think its clear that it there are some issues to be worked out in order to deal with invasive non-native species, but the overall tone of the hearing is that this should be done without harming the pet industry, and it is going to take a collaborative effort to figure out how to deal with invasive species in a way that doesn't interfere with the majority of non-native pets, which don't pose a threat.
